The wells have bevelled edges at the bottom, so that the embryos etc. are more visible and easier to handle. The rectangular base also allows the bottom of the dish to be labelled, reducing the risk of mixing up the dishes, and the lid can be covered when labelling. Advantage of the "extra well", it can also be used e.g. for pipette rinsing.
